A Place Where Children Come First History and Mission The Weekday Nursery School was founded in 1966 as a half-day nursery school serving children ages 3 through 5. It is administered by the Christ United Methodist Church Council of Ministries as a non-profit non-sectarian school approved by the City of New Rochelle Board of Education. Until 1990 the school was small and consisted of only two classrooms. In 1990 a program for 2 year olds was added and in 1991 a third classroom was added. In 1995 a 4th classroom was added. At this time the school provides classes for toddlers and a parent, 2 year olds without a parent attending, and for 3 through 5 year olds. It remains a half-day nursery school with extended day options. In 1987 the school was accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), as a model of excellence for young children. Since then the school has been re-accredited every 3 years and has maintained these high national standards or exceeded them. The school draws children from New Rochelle and Pelham primarily, but also from Pelham Manor, Scarsdale, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Eastchester. The school continues to offer half-day classes in the morning and in the afternoon. The program is nondoctrinal and multicultural. Parent programs are provided throughout the year to help young families gain knowledge of child development as well as to address some of the topics of interest to families of pre-schoolers. In 2001 the school became licensed by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services and is now able to offer extended day options to our families. Mission Statement The Weekday Nursery School was established by the Christ United Methodist Church in order to enlarge the scope of its ministry to the families of its own membership and to provide a needed service for the community. The purpose of Weekday Nursery School is to nurture the emotional, social, cognitive and physical development of pre-school children. The school strives to meet the needs of parents and the community as an early childhood facility and contribute to the wholesome growth and development of future citizens in this community. What the Parents say... "I've sent four children to Weekday and we could not have been happier. All of our boys entered kindergarten with really great listening and speaking skills and an eagerness to learn. And even today, they remember their teachers fondly and ask to visit every now and then. We felt that we had made a wonderful choice where they could really enjoy childhood, and yet learn so much from such great teachers." "My children had a wonderful experience at Weekday Nursery School. They made some wonderful friends there, many of whom we still see, and I made some good friends for life with some of the parents. I worked on a fundraiser for the school. I planned and executed a Children's Carnival and I still remember what fun we all had - the children and the adults. Weekday helped all of us. My children had a fabulous nursery school and my husband and I benefitted from many of the parent workshops that were offered to us." "My son attended Weekday for three years; he began there as a two year old. He learned so much there; he loved building with blocks and he adored Legos. He was with people who truly cared for him and help him in every way possible. During the time he attended I was divorced and the staff helped us to get through some very difficult times. My son was able to attend school full-time from 8:30AM to 3:30PM so that I could go back to school and begin working. I couldn't have done this without all the help from the staff, the Scholarship Committee and the director. I could never thank them enough." "What we really loved about Weekday is that children are allowed to be children there. All of the learning is done through play and we found that our daughter has learned so much through stories and music and also from playing with her friends. The staff really understands child development and feels that every child can be successful and they make sure that every child has 'a good day, everyday.' It's amazing how easy they make it seem, but whenever I've helped out in the classroom, I leave exhausted! Chloe plays 'school' at home and we hear her imitate the teachers and it is so obvious that she adores them. And, they are offering her something that we can't - a social setting with 12 - 13 other children her age." "How fortunate we were when we discovered Weekday Nursery School so nearby. We have sent our oldest off to kindergarten and still have two children attending! The flexible hours are so helpful; we use Lunch Bunch some days, PlayCare another, and even late pick-up once a week. Life is busy when you've got little children! The children are so happy to go to school every day and we know how much each teacher loves working with the children - it's so obvious. And, it's easy to contact the Office or a teacher when necessary. Weekday send home lots of newsletters, which we find not only informative, but also often find some great parenting tips." |
